A Mother's Will to Deliver

Grace Holub - small While Halloween is a popular day for costumed celebrations and trick-or-treat, it appears to be less desirable choice for a birth date. In a study at the Yale School of Public Health released this month, 1.8 million birth certificates over an eleven year period were reviewed. It is not surprising that there was a 16.9% drop in scheduled Cesarean births. What was interesting was that there was a 5.3% dip in spontaneous vaginal births on Halloween, suggesting that perhaps a mother’s will may play a role in when she goes into labor.

Pre-hypertension Increases the Risk of Stroke

Grace Holub - small Individuals with mildly elevated blood pressures, also known as pre-hypertension, were shown to be 55% more likely to have a stroke than those with normal blood pressures, according to an article published in the journal Neurology last week. This study is significant in that they were able to investigate 518,520 adults from twelve previous studies on blood pressure and stroke occurrence. The results may lead to recommendations of earlier drug interventions to lower blood pressure.
